Four women are searching for something that eludes them, that shifts and changes and slips from their grasp. They’re full of yearning. They ache. They want something and they want it bad. It’s there somewhere. It’s there. It’s there. It’s there. TWO SHOWINGS. Each different. With Patricia Cornelius, Maude Davey.
Bakehouse Theatre - Main Stage
Sat 27 Feb - 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sun 28 Feb - 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
This is a rare opportunity to observe the development of a new script with two of the most vibrant theatre artists working in Australia today -- playwright Patricia Cornelius and director Maude Davey. You are invited to witness either or both of these open rehearsals of dangerous scenes from a project we’re calling “Spring”. Each day will be different. The playwright is crafting exploration of “excruciating pleasure".
Cornelius and Davey have been collaborating with four performers since July 2015, studying, reading, performing and improvising scenes from (and inspired by) Frank Wedekind’s scandalous script called “Spring Awakening”.
Written in 1896, Spring Awakening is still produced around the world. A Broadway production with a Deaf and hearing cast was a sell-out in 2015. Its theme of cultural hypocrisy and the tragedies that ensue when basic information about sex and sexuality is kept from growing minds and bodies seemed a ripe field for a theatre of disability to plow.
Come see what’s been growing in that field and watch two expert theatre-makers harvest the crop.
These rehearsals will be of particular interest to students of theatre and to theatre practitioners. They will be of interest as well to students of women’s sexuality and sexuality and disability.
This is an arts exploration, not a scientific nor an academic one. Confidentiality is requested and expected. Pleasure is sought and welcome.
ANGELS: An imaginative nurse transforms a church into a psychiatric hospital. He invents meditative methods to calm the patients and control them. He introduces an angel as therapy. The patients confess their personal desires and dreams to the Angel. In the end, they think they are angels too, and believe they have the power to abandon the institution and act like gods for a better future.
