Alexis West

Aboriginal performer, dancer, tutor.

I am a Birra Gubba, Waka Waka, Kanak and Anglo Australian woman from Queensland. In colloquial terms I am an Aboriginal, South Sea Islander and Caucasian woman.

I was adopted into a multi racial family: my parents, older brother and younger sister are Anglo Celtic Australian, and my younger brother is Torres Strait Islander. My younger sister has multiple disabilities and my family has fostered children at risk and children with special needs.

I am a single mother of two very beautiful and talented boys. I have completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Aboriginal Studies. I have studied Indigenous dance, both traditional and contemporary (Aboriginal Dance Theatre of Redfern and NAISDA National Aboriginal Islander Skills Development Association) as well as studying acting (Eora College of Performing Arts). I have worked as a performer in both professional and in amateur productions. I am currently developing scripts for short films and writing a one woman stage production, working title Removal.

I have worked as a tutor with No Strings Attached since February 2007 and find the work rewarding, challenging and exciting. It is an honour to work with the participants, and it is always inspiring and fun developing exciting new works.
